About the Artwork:
Title: Cheeseface
Original Artwork Completed: 2020
Back in 2009 my boyfriend (now husband) & I went on a trip to Thailand. That trip saw us spending a few days at resort in Phuket where every day, around the same time, we would relax on our balcony after a swim, eating bugles & drinking beer. A little black bird came to visit on the first day. We shared some bugle crumbs & just like that, he was there every day, same time, waiting for more crumbs.
Fast forward to our life in Singapore starting 2018, where these little black birds are everywhere. In our first apartment there we had a large balcony where we regularly ate meals/snacks, soon enough we were putting out crumbs because the same little birds were coming every day to visit. It wasn't long before they memorised our meal times, invited their friends & got ballsy enough to start coming inside the apartment looking for us too. When we moved to our second Singapore apartment there was yet another little bird that would visit the ledge outside my studio & chat to me most days.
Way back in 2009 when we first encountered these birds, I turned to my (now) husband & said 'I wonder what kind of birds they are?' & he in his infinite wisdom (read: wise-cracking smart-alec) said 'CHEESE FACE' & to this day that's what we call them, even our boys say 'Hello Cheese Face!!' when we see them. They're considered a pest species of bird but they're actually super intelligent & I happen to love how they’ve weaved their way into our life.
